Maria is one of the very first bronzes I made; After a lifetime of modelling with clay, the idea came up to cast my ‘terra cotta’ Maria in to bronze. Since then, my modelling technique has changed, some pieces now are more detailed, but the essence is still very much the same. I discovered that although anatomical correctness is important, expression and the feeling the sculpture portrays and evokes is much more important to me. Maria also was one of the first projects where I worked with a model. (A Greek voice student) And from her I leaned to listen to her body expression. There is not much ‘story’ to this sculpture: just a woman, happy to be expecting. Later I have worked extensively with the subject of pregnancy.
